Negative Nathan & Positive Poppy Reviews!: The Medieval Event 2014

Hello Tappers!

After a great response from the previous posts of Negative Nathan and Positive Poppy we are both back to discuss the negatives and positives of the latest event. These posts will now be posted once a month reviewing the month or a certain update. This is a balanced argument post as I look at the negatives and Poppy will look at the positives. So let’s get started with reviewing the latest event, Clash of Clones. I will start off by looking at the negatives and Poppy following in the same post by looking at the positives.

Negative Nathan:

I have to say I’m no longer living in Dullsville and It was hard to find some negatives about this recent event however with some help from Em I was able to find some negatives, especially with the recent update. So before I was able to update the recent event I got this message on my phone, again:

Screenshot_2014-08-09-19-07-00

“D’oh! There isn’t enough storage space left on your device to download all of this cool stuff. Free up some space, and try again.”

I don’t know how many apps I uninstalled but it took a while until I finally got the latest update. I know this isn’t Tapped Out’s fault but I’m finding it hard to keep the game along with other apps I need for work and the site. However it wasn’t long before the game started lagging, crashed my game and chucked me out. This has been going on for a while not just for myself and EA should have this under control by now.

I was away during the arrival of the update so it took a while to catch up and get revenge on the attackers. But it was hard to get revenge with the revenge button being broken. I finally got settled into the event and it seemed there was too much going on with handling two currencies. Gold and Elixir along with handling nerds and cheaters. It seemed like almost everything was premium and to complete the event you have to purchase donuts. If you look on the Clash of Clones collection everything is either premium or game currency, with you needing the game currency to upgrade castles, It’s just all too much to handle and take in!

CoC_titlescreen_2013

The recent update also cheated its players by changing the Elixir Bundle on the Personal Prizes from 4000 Elixir to 1000 Elixir. I thought this was a way for EA to make its players purchase Elixir on Wednesdays. With almost everything costing donuts or event currency it proves EA is out to get one thing!

I was also disappointed with the fact that this event had nothing to do with the Simpsons. It was just an event surrounded by a different game which I found very strange for EA to do. Nothing in this update has been linked to the show which I found very disappointing! Isn’t this suppose to be the SIMPSONS Tapped Out? However, we are only in the second week of the event and I just hope EA has something up their sleeves, with the event not ending till October.

Other Negatives on the Event!:

  • Cheaters not registering task as done with over 730 reporting this, but the latest update seems to have fixed this.
  • Missing Elixir reward when won – EA is trying to restore it if you contact them.
  • The Broken revenge button.
  • They have cut the payout in half if the building you attack is defended.
  • The strategy part of it, more math to figure if added nerds will ensure victory or not.

Positive Poppy:

I was super excited once I found out we was going to get a Clash of Clans themed event! I personally don’t play Clash of Clans but I have heard good things about the game and see that it’s very popular in the App Store. I waited patiently for the update to arrive and once I finally updated my game my eyes were amazed!

95e054846623d74eefc06143f80355f9

The first thing that I loved instantly about this update was our new splash screen! I haven’t even got into the event yet and I was already excited with the splash screen showing The Simpsons fighting back against the giant tapping finger. Before the event visiting my friends daily went to weekly due to seeing no point in visiting them due to having all the FP prizes. Although with the Clash of Clones update I have found myself visiting my friends with every chance I get! This event has made me more interactive with my friends as a player.

In addition to interacting with my friends more, I noticed that EA is also trying to interact with their players more. EA has given us Elixir Wednesday and Special Troop Saturday which I find helpful as I get max nerds on Saturdays along with a chance to obtain more Elixir if I choose on a Wednesday. It also makes myself feel a lot better as I’m not constantly pressured to purchase Elixir as It only comes once a week.

99de231d3c6cd686_SimpGot.xxxlarge_1

The fact that EA has made an event not based on the show is thinking outside the box. Instead of getting the same old Simpson content we have got NEW content in our games that has been created especially by EA. Something like Family Guy are doing now with their events.

I have seen a lot of complaints about this event being too long, on the other hand I find the length of this event perfectly fitted. Players are often complaining about the event is too short and want an extension, but EA has given this end date so players don’t complain and the lower level players have chance to catch up. This also makes me think that EA has more planned for this event and give it a week and we might see either an update in this event or maybe a level update in fact? Take your time with this event as it is going to be around for a while.

Other positives on the event is the fact we got more LAND! Need I say more? Poppy.

  1. I wonder if time difference is affecting those in the UK, are most players in the US? I tend to be asleep when people are raiding my town but my raiding attacks are almost always stopped in their tracks and I tend to send them before I go to bed instead of when I wake up so I was wondering if that might be one of the reasons.

To really make any headway at all in the event you really have to play it several times a day, but personally I find it tiring to play it so often every day and it makes me lose interest and leave for days at a time, it just feels like grinding. I don’t think I’ve managed to make it to all the prizes in even one event and I’ve been here since Wacking Day, and in a lot of those events I’ve really tried to get far, playing often and timing it but it never feels like it pays off.

    1. I suppose most are in the US but it doesnt seem to matter that much. Im in Europe and I have insane hours. I try to login every 2h, so I can collect nerds and deploy them right away. I think that is the key to collecting Gold/Elixir – to always have nerds attacking other towns.

  2. Clearly they have just reused the normal event code visit others, click, get rewards, etc. as the fight logic is daft in this event eg.

Best if you are attacked – so you can defend and win!
If you are attacked heavily (lose building) – you win again, just less!
Worst case if your town/buildings are ignored – You don’t win anything!
Building fortifications around castles, etc adds nothing to defences. Better off hiding your castles in a big map!
Can’t attack others building already under attack. Why not?! In normal battle logic they would be weakened and prime targets.
Bizarre to see friends attack me and visit buildings – So be a good friend and attack your neighbours! ;-S

This event has been relatively fun so far – I have built my castles and continue to use the random attack button and overnight this generally will yield up to 8,000 Elixir so I’ve found the event relatively “easy”.

I’m 100% in the same boat as you. I was already getting bored with the game, only playing two or three times a week, then this update hit and i could not care less about it. I have no desire to play while this update is going on. Maybe il check out the next update to see if that sparks anything, otherwise i think im done.

  5. At first I didn’t care for the fact that the “here’s some stuff to get you to spend donuts” items were so blatant about it (3 towers, 2 walls/side), but then I realized they gave us 30 donuts that we could use on those items however we saw fit. I like the flexibility this gave us in building the various castles however large and in whatever shape we wanted to build them in.

Personally, I chose to keep all of the free donuts (I’m not a free player if you’re curious). I used a Gazebo as Lisa’s fourth “tower” and filled in wall sections with chain link Fences. For Bart, I filled in both the wall gaps and the tower area with trees. I built it right next to Lisa’s castle, so her tower and the trees do a good job of hiding that there is no cardboard tower in that corner.

  6. Yeah, I pretty much stopped playing this game during this event. I just lost interest in it. Elixir, nerds… At least ‘the other game’ has Felicia Day, Captain Tightpants and other celebrities involved even if just slightly.

The mechanics were confusing to me and I didn’t find any of it appealing. I think I played three times or so since the event began and each time I was like ‘ok this is it i’m getting back into it’ but in the end I didn’t care enough and that’s a problem.

I can’t even hate the update, I just don’t care about it.

  7. Nothing from the show in this update, Nathan?? Umm..Boxingham Palace-which is awesome and worth it as a standalone property on its own. Too bad they didn’t do a Nelson skin where he can particiapte in raids with his helmet and cardboard dowel sword!!! I’m sure the stocks, hay cart and chicken coop can be found in some of the “Historical Stories” Simpsons episodes done!

  8. I like the event in some ways but I do find its alot of upkeep. Much of the rest of my frustrations is in the writing. Theres a fine line the size of a football field between being ironic with your players and outright mocking the amount of time and money we spend. Having characters be so direct especially with the financial side of things is a very bitter pill to swallow which is why since Easter I have been thinking of giving up.

  9. My game glitched when I switched devices. It gave me the towers prize twice. I switched devices a few hours apart as well.

Not a bad glitch to have since I have enough towers to finish the castles at not extra cost now.

  10. I see some people complaining that this event has little to do with the TV series. I hardly think this matters, as Clash of Clones has been so much fun! It’s great to see EA doing something new and different. After Stonecutters, this has been the most exciting update of the year! Besides, who’s to say this won’t pop up in an episode this coming season? The season premiere is this month and the event lasts into October…

    1. I agree totally. I’m a super fan of the show but absolutely love that this event is completely new and unseen.

  11. Not quite sure when but my “Confirm Donut Spend” was reset again (I checked it after installing the update but have had to do about 5 re-installs). Not being a premium player, I’m constantly saving my them up, buying a cheaters 20 by accident is a little annoying.
Isn’t this an anti trust issue? (especially considering this costs some people actual money).
I know in my country we have something called Good Faith and am positive this behavour is in breach of it.

    Like

    1. Curious, are you on Android? I’ve never had it reset, but I’m on iOS. Not that that matters, as this is something that EA does need to fix.

Can’t comment on the laws of your country (I’m not a lawyer) but antitrust is related to competition and the lack thereof. See this link here. Event though EA is a big humongous company, they have plenty of competition. But this is definitely worth complaining to EA about.

Thanks for all your hard work!

    1. Which new quest? Haven’t seen anything arrive in an update today.

      Like

      1. There was a 12 hour quest for Willie to take leaves. I don’t recall the exact name, but something close to “is it autumn yet?”. He rakes leaves.

Once that was complete there’s a 12 hour quest for duff man called “hey, where’s the party?”. He parties down at moe’s.

        1. Those are just some of the random tasks the game throws at you from time to time. They’re really annoying.

          Like

        2. Now that I think about it, these might be some of those one-off quests. Whoops!

          Like

          1. Yes, those are random ones that pops up when you dont have enough quest in the task book.
Bart and Milhouse having a sleepover, Harvesting something on Cletus’ farm (especially if you just started corn!), Walking Maggie, Visit the track etc

            Like

        3. They are not new quests. They are called random tasks. They appear randomly at any time and have no story line. They’re designed to keep players actively playing aside from doing nothing but tapping buildings between updates but unfortunately they appear during updates as well so I understand your confusion.

  13. I guess it doesn’t have anything DIRECTLY to do with the show, no. But given how often the show resorts to lazy parody these days to fill episodes, it’s at least in the spirit of the show 😉

  14. Personally, I’m not thrilled by the event, but that is mainly due to my personal preferences – I don’t like it that it has nothing to do with the Simpsons and I’m not that enthusiastic about medieval games. That said, one cannot deny that it is an innovative event with a lot of good ideas. They certainly thought of something different this time and I appreciate that, even if the event itself is not my cup of tea.
Two things I like very much: 1. being able to visit random towns instead of having to rely on neighbours. I have enough neighbours, but it’s a nice new twist, one gets to see more towns and it’s probably also helpful for new players 2. no price wheel!!!
Some of the dialogues are pretty funny as well and this nerd-attack thing is more intriguing than I expected it to be.
One thing I don’t like very much, though (and it would interest me if I’m alone with that): quests are becoming very boring. I don’t play that much currently and so I’m probably not as far as many of you, but currently 90% of my quests are “update Castle xy” and “update person xy”. This is a bit tedious and not very imaginative. Does it get better again?

I liked it up until I noticed that the castle walls are available for purchase via elixir, but Lisa’s and Bart’s can only be bought with doughnuts.

I’m starting to hate this game because of things like this.

    Like

    1. Thumbs up! 100% agree, now I got an odd side walls for those two castles.

      Like

      1. I have read somewhere that you earn castle walls after you finish upgrading the castles. Do you know if this is true?

        Like

        1. Yes, you should get one wall for each upgrade over level 20 (cost +100,000 elixir to upgrade levels beyond 20) Not sure if this applies to the Recyle and Boxingham as well.
Considering that a BarbarianCastle wall in the menu costs 100E it seems silly to pay over a 1000 times more by getting them from upgrades. To bring ONE castle to lvl 20 it will cost 68,750 elixir and to get all three Castles to lvl 20 you’ll need 206,250 elixir.

And wouldn’t you know my next mission is for the barbarian to interact with Smithers therefore I cannot complete that mission or any mission involving Smithers. And I can’t start the game over again at level 43 and lose everything I’ve bought and won during events;( im so not happy right now!!!!!!

This is the 1st event i dont really care if i got all the prizes and i dont play it multiple times or at any chance i can like i did all the other events before. I just dont feel it and it’s too far off from the simpsons series. I also notice my town is no longer heavily attacked compared to the 1st week of the event. Maybe others also got bored with it.
The only positive i can think of – i’m visiting my friends again and collecting quite a handful of free donuts.

      1. When you are at maximum level on Frienship points, currently last prize is the KBBL, you unlock the chance of getting donuts for your actions in friends towns. When a new prize/friendlevel is added you go back to collecting FPs and the donutchance is once again locked until you reach the new maximum level.

As far as I know, there was no cut in the elixir prize. The prize was always 1,000 elixir, but the image suggested 4,000 elixir so the image was changed.
Adding to the list of things that ARE from the show, the hot air balloon is from “Little Orphan Millie” (S19E06.)
Also, I can’t wrap my head around people getting upset that this event is not directly connected to a single episode of the show. At some point, the game WILL run out of things to apply from the show. I see no harm in EA taking some artistic liberties especially since the show writers ARE involved with the game (see: Matt Selman.)

  25. Hi.
This does possibly remind me of the episode where Bart and Marge were playing a World of Warcraft type game.
Having just completed the personal prizes I’m thinking ‘now what’ there must be more to come with how long it is.
How long the event is, worries me a little, from what I understand the event finishes close to the treehouse of horror episode. Does this mean we don’t get a Halloween event (that would be sad) or back to back events. Could this even merge with the halloween event? May even have a future episode that ties into this event?
I hope Positive Poppy is correct and that there is more to this event.

My only negative is that it goes on a bit long. But, maybe other content is coming. One other little negative is that if you keep upgrading your castles, it takes so long for someone to destroy your buildings they just move on to someone who isn’t as far along.

Other than that, loving the fun decos and funny story lines. Looks like we’ll go right into Halloween after this event ( just guessing )

    Like

    1. Maybe. I don’t care how long it takes to destroy the building. I’m betting that most of my nerds will fail anyway, so I send 1 per building. And definitely attack the castles first. Yes, definitely thinking that Halloween will follow!

I do the same thing and I’m cleaning up in gold and elixir. This six week event has been going for almost two weeks and I have 22000 gold and level 11 castles without buying anything. I figure people either respond immediately to my attacks and I lose all the nerds or they don’t play a lot and I can clear a house/castle in 10 hours easily. Sending out 60 nerds to attack 60 houses every two hours really increases my chances…
