July 4th 2015 – A Final Look: Buyers Guide

Let me begin by apologizing for the very delayed post. I am recovering from being struck by a car a few days ago and was not able to get this out in time. So since we did not get out a proper Overview and there’s still time to purchase the content I’ve decided to combine the Should I Buy….July 4 2015? with the July 4 2015: Full Overview. This way we have a properly documented source of reference as it pertains to the game’s history and you get a detailed guide to assist in any last minute decisions. Forgive some of the wording as I started writing this on the day of the release.

Just as I was about to begin a period of utter dread in anticipation of yet another boring Fourth of July mini-event, chock full of rehashed content and characters, yet again EA threw a curve ball at me, an increasingly more common occurrence thus far in 2015. The July 4 2015 event dropped with little warning, and while it does contain the usual 2-3 rehashed characters and their anchor buildings, it’s the very few new items that make this little tip of the brim towards American independence all worth even talking about.

Even our good ol’ pal Gil Gunderson came to town with his pockets full of snake oil for the holiday with a brand new Gil Deal to make you pay money for an “all-American, patriotic yet insanely scandalous and historically disgraced previously breathing” symbol of American freedom, isn’t he such a swell guy. That Gil.  And he brought along a Tricky Dick that he pulled from a Deep Throat of American history to offer him up to you, as bait, I mean as the newest ex-whatever to fill in the ranks of the Fourth of July character set.

Promo_4th_of_July2015_Overview_Image

To find out what this years celebration of independence has brought to our ever-growing virtual populaces, follow me after the usual complementary yet-ever-so-spoilery image of what we’re going to spoil for you anyway once you do actually “follow me.” Your welcome!

Richard_Nixon_Episode_Image

The purpose of the Topix Overview is to document and display an entire update or event in one complete article so that you know everything a release has brought as well as to serve as historical reference for the game’s history. So that years from now, hopefully, one can come back to an Overview article to answer a random question, win a bar bet, impress your frie-n..d..s, well never mind. If you’re coming HERE years from now to read about old updates to a game, the likelihood of you having friends is pret-ty low. Unless your friends are awesome and would race you here to acquire knowledge of the “useless” type. I’m kidding obviously, but whatever reason you may need an Overview for, we strive to jam pack them with as much information as possible.

Full Update Layout Image by Em

For starters I thought I would include this awesome pic that our own Emma made that shows every item that was made available for the July 4 2015 update. Many of you do not see all of those items, that’s because many of them are unique, meaning only 1 can be obtained and you already have that item so it will not show in the menu. Kudos to Emma for this terrific image:

July 4 2015 Gil Deal

As I stated way back in the beginning of this article, before all of the annoying rambling, everyone’s favorite hard-luck story Gil is back in town. As usual Gil cometh with a brand spanking new premium deal which, coincidentally, is also this mini-update’s biggest, most notable addition:

Deal or Dud?:

Thumbs UpThumbs Up

In my opinion President Nixon is the best presidential addition to the game to date. DOn’t get me wrong, from an American standpoint, and I do love my country and its origins, Lincoln and Washington were two of the greatest leaders ever. BUT in the game they translate to some rather boring characters. Tricky Dick cracks me up just by looking at him.

Pros:

  • Voiced character. Although not extensively but he does have sound.
  • 5 permanent, premium paying tasks after quest is completed.
  • Hotel is large and visually appealing that stands out.
  • His historic, scandalous presidency makes for great humor.
  • Completes 4th of July character set
  • For events with character group tasks Richard is included in Premium CharactersCelebrity, Criminal, Civil Servant, Pessimist and Bowler AND can be used right away for any Tap Ball task involving any of those groups.
  • It’s Tricky Dick, come on!

Cons:

  • Richard Nixon’s historical significance doesn’t matter much if you’re not American or a fan of the US.
  • His legacy is remembered more of disgrace and scandal than of wise, admirable leader.
  • Only 2 of 5 permanent tasks are visible
  • Voiced is a stretch, he has 4 sound files which aren’t a lot.
  • Only 1 of his permanent tasks involve the Scandal-gate Hotel leaving the large building virtually unused.

Call my decision swayed because I am American and patriotic but I’m calling this a DEAL all the way!

Attached Quest(s):

  •  “One Last Presidential Prank” – 1 part w/ Homer & Bart

Permanent Task(s): 1

  • After attached quest is completed Homer will receive a permanent task:
  • “Egg the Presidential Estate” – 3 hours – $200 / 55 XP

 Limited Time: 111113_0544_DonutHolePr46.png

Gil Deal Expiration: July 9, 2015 @ 8:00 am GMT

Deal or Dud?

Thumbs Down Thumbs Up

The only reason I would suggest to buy this building is due to the fact that it adds a permanent task for Homer. Yet even though Bart is included in the attached quest, he does not receive the task permanently which makes no sense. Other than that it is just a small cash generating space filler. No bells or whistles, nothing fantastic about it.

Pros:

  • Moderately priced for the visual appeal and size of building
  • Adds a permanent task for Homer

Cons:

  • Essentially a no-use building except for the task for Homer.
  • Unexciting animation when the building is used
  • CANNOT be sold. Once you buy it, you’re stuck with it.

Thumbs Up

As one of the very, very few cash items for this update, I would highly recommend at least one. Whether your American or not, everyone loves fireworks!

And for all of the loyal, hard-tapping, long time players, that is all of the new items available for you with this update. The remainder of content offerings are all returning from previous July 4th events as well as other updates.

July 4 2015 – Returning/Old Items

Hover-Copter

This item returns to us from the Treehouse of Horrors XXV Event of 2014. It was available as a craftable item.

“And if it stayed airborne for more than a couple of seconds. Mm-hay.”

Quest: 111113_0544_DonutHolePr46.png

  • Tap the Hover-Copter – 1-part quest

Deal or Dud?:

Thumbs Down

Unless you missed these when they first were available or really like Hover-Copters, I wouldn’t jump to buy any more than maybe one of these. The 10 measly points for Obedience being the only reward doesn’t really match up to the 70 donut price tag. It has a so-so animation but takes up a fairly large amount of space.

Fireworks Barge

The Fireworks Barge was originally released as part of the 2014 July 4th update. The cost then is the same as it is for 2015.

Fireworks Barge

Cost: 80 Donuts

Requirement(s):

  • Must have at least one block of ocean purchased to place it.

Reward(s):

  • 2.75% bonus money & XP
  • Contributes 800 points towards Vanity

Placement: Ocean ONLY. Cannot be placed anywhere except on the ocean expansion area.

Size: 6 X 5 squares

Can Be Sold: 111113_0544_DonutHolePr37.png

Can Be Stored: 111113_0544_DonutHolePr46.png

Unique: 111113_0544_DonutHolePr46.png

Animation: 111113_0544_DonutHolePr46.png –When tapped all 10 shells load but only 1 fires off as a dud.

Tapping Sound:

Attached Quest(s):  111113_0544_DonutHolePr37.png

Character Involvement/Tasks: 111113_0544_DonutHolePr37.png

Deal or Dud?:

Thumbs Up

Although the barge has no character involvement, unlocks no quests or tasks, I like it for the fact that it is an ocean item which, at the time this was originally released, were few and far between. The animation is clever as you expect a large display only to get a dud. It’s up to you but I say go for it.

Box of Fireworks / Pinwheel Fireworks

Both of these items were originally released with the very first 4th of July update in 2013 and have both returned with every July 4th update since.

Box Of Fireworks /  Pinwheel firework

Cost: 60 Donuts / 40 Donuts

Requirement(s): Level 5 (although there are no requirements listed in the files, level 5 is the typical base requirement)

Reward(s):

  • Pinwheel Fireworks – 40 XP placement bonus / 2.0% bonus $ and XP / 400 points towards Vanity

Placement:

  • Grass | Beach | Pavement | Boardwalk (Both items)

Size:

  • Box of Fireworks – 2 X 2 squares
  • Pinwheels – 2 X 2 squares

Can Be Sold: 111113_0544_DonutHolePr37.png

Unique: 111113_0544_DonutHolePr37.png – Neither have purchase limits

  • Pinwheels spin and shoot sparklers

Tapping Sound:

Deal or Dud?:

Thumbs Up

As I stated above, it doesn’t matter what country you are from, everyone loves fireworks. Neither of these show any symbols or affiliation to any geographical location so they can be used wherever and however you want. You can have fireworks all year round and you do not need to buy a ton to enjoy them.

Holo Flag

The Holo Flag was first released not too long ago and is the youngest “old” item of the bunch. This item was released with the Mathletes Feat episode tie-in back on May 13, 2015. It appears as an empty flag pole until place which activates holographic images to be displayed on it that change between 3 images.

Deal or Dud?:

Thumbs Up

This item is extremely unique and equally cheap. For a very small amount of donuts you get an easily placeable item with the ability to change the appearance to reflect a design or mood and doesn’t take up a lot of space. Although I can agree that not everyone wants an item that only displays an American flag among its images, the best part is you simply don’t have to ever change it to that.

American Flag

The good ol’ American Flag was the first flag offered in the game to coincide with the very first 4th of July Event in 2013 and has made a return appearance for every event celebrating July 4th.

American Flag

Cost: 111113_0544_DonutHolePr43.png5600

Requirement(s): Level 5 (although there are no requirements listed in the files, level 5 is the typical base requirement)

Tapping Sound:  111113_0544_DonutHolePr37.png

Deal or Dud?:

Thumbs Up & Thumbs Down

Any time we are offered a cash item I say go for it since they are offered the least between freemium and premium. However, the fact that its only bonus is a minimum bump to Vanity, even for cash it’s not all that worth it. The best part though is in-game cash is a hell of a lot easier to recover than premium currency. Buying at least one wouldn’t hurt for my fellow patriotic tappers, however there are millions of tappers from many other countries and the appeal for the American flag may not be so much.

Lincoln Memorial

The “Simpsonized” version of the historic and wildly popular tourist attraction in our nation’s capital, Washington D.C., was first made available for purchase during the 2014 July 4th update.

Lincoln Memorial

Cost: 111113_0544_DonutHolePr43.png100,000

Requirement(s): Level 5 (although there are no requirements listed in the files, level 5 is the typical base requirement)

Reward(s):

  • Contributes 870 points towards Vanity

Placement:

  • Grass | Pavement | Beach | Squidport

Size: 3 X 3 squares

Tapping Audio: 111113_0544_DonutHolePr37.png

Deal or Dud?:

Thumbs Down

It saddens me to give such a recognized symbol of our nation a thumbs down, however, strictly in terms of value and worth in the game, it really doesn’t have any. ure if you have $100,000 to throw at it by all means go ahead, but don’t expect anything of significance in return. No animations, no sounds, barely a bonus, it’s a no-brainer. I would have expected at least a Simpson twist on this item such as a quirky animation of Abe when the monument is tapped but no go here. Obviously for those who bleed red, white and blue, you will or have already bought this just because, come on, it’s the Lincoln Memorial!!

Lisa Statue of Liberty

Lisa Statue of Liberty

Cost: 75 Donuts

Requirement(s): Level 5 (although there are no requirements listed in the files, level 5 is the typical base requirement)

Reward(s):

  • 120 XP bonus upon first placement/purchase
  • 2.75% bonus money & XP
  • Contributes 10 points to Obedience

Placement:

  • Grass | Pavement | Beach | Squidport

Tapping Audio: 111113_0544_DonutHolePr37.png

Deal or Dud?:

Thumbs Down & Thumbs Up

This one is up in the air for me as far as definitively recommending you buy it or not. On the surface it appears to be the same uneventful, boring, space-filler like the Lincoln Memorial but this is far more costly at 75 donuts. However, the Lisa Statue does come with a decent bonus of 2.75% and a rare contribution to Obedience, we don’t see too many items improving on that category. It definitely is unique in appearance which fits well with the eclectic, off-the-norm type of designers and is a real eye-catcher. But if you are the type of tapper who wants bang for your buck as in movement, blinking, flashing, making noise or some type of sound, then this is not the item for you.

Liberty Bell

Probably one of the most famous symbols of American freedom and independence, the Liberty Bell was a free, hidden giveaway once you completed all 13 parts of the American Apu quest during the inaugural 4th of July update in 2013. It was then released as a cash item the following year in 2014 and once again in this 2015 update.

Deal or Dud?:

Thumbs Up

I’m going to have to go all thumbs up on the Liberty Bell, not because of the little bonus it gives but because of the fact that originally it came with absolutely no bonus or positive contribution to the game other than that it was a free gift. But for a mere $50,000 you get an easily placeable, world renowned piece of history and you can ring that sucker until your fingers bleed. Why not? What do you have to lose?

All-American Apu (Skin for Apu)

Coming as a part of one of the first updates covered here at Topix, All-American Apu was the first costume/skin for our beloved, over-worked father of 8. It was a free item for the 4th of July 2013 Event and was inspired from the classic episode from Season 7 titled, “Much Apu About Nothing” during which Apu obtained this “disguise” to avoid being deported by Mayor Quimby after a bear was found wandering through Evergreen Terrace. This outfit was also brought back as a premium skin for the 2014 4th of July update as well as this years celebration of independence.

Although Rex isn’t the most well-known character from the series, he’s certainly one of the most interesting. His joint-task with Flanders is one of the best visible tasks in the entire game and that alone makes it worth the very reasonable 90 donut price tag. The Nighthawk Diner is a parody of the well-known painting by artist Edward Hopper called Nighthawks which makes it one of the most unique looking buildings in Springfield. Downside is there is only one permanent task for the Diner so it will be another income generator.

Ye Olde Cherry Tree w/ George Washington

Our country’s first president arrived to Springfield in a most unique way; with a cherry tree which is actually a decoration instead of the usual building/character combos. He was first made available with the July 4th 2014 update. He is the second real-life president to be introduced into the game.

Deal or Dud?:

Thumbs Down

Although George has earned his spot among the cast of characters for Tapped Out it’s price tag is what kills this deal. 180 donuts for a tree and only 2 visible tasks? I don’t think so. I don’t pass on much but this one I would without a doubt.

Giuseppe’s Workshop w/ Giuseppe

Giuseppe is a veteran of the limited-time, holiday/event store menu having been offered for purchase for the 3rd time counting this year’s update. He was first offered with the July 4th 2014 update and then made a surprise winter appearance at the tail end of the Christmas/Holiday 2014 Event as part of the New Years Eve 2014-2015 quest and is unlocked upon placement of his workshop. He was first a cash offering for his first appearance and has since been the premium combo you see today.

Deal or Dud?:

Thumbs Up

There’s not much that I could say that would be different from the majority of the July 4th Character/Building combos. Giuseppe is a fun character, earns premium, is voiced and has at least 2 tasks to use the Workshop. Can’t beat it.

Lincoln’s Cabin w/ Abraham Lincoln

Ol’ Honest Abe was the very first presidential forefather to be warped into the Tapped Out universe. He and his cabin were part of the very first 4th of July update in 2013. It is the only combo to return for all 3 July 4th events that did not see a change in price or currency. He started as premium and remains so today.

Even though Abe and his Cabin are a bit more expensive than the other 4th of July combo’s, he’s a solid character with a decent contribution to your game with his premium earning tasks, voiced actions and “fish out of water” look about him. He has more visible tasks than any of the other presidential offerings. I say go for it.

Again I sincerely apologize for the lateness of this post, I am still not 100% from my accident but writing posts like this is what I enjoy doing and helps me feel better. If it’s too late to matter at least I can hope it serves as a solid reference for a chapter to look back on of the game’s history. Thanks for reading!

  1. Mike, sorry you were hit by a car. (BTDT). The most important element in this whole process is for you to get better. Don’t worry about a GAME that in reality is just that!
Take time off for yourself to heal. You won’t get any backlashing from me!

    Cheers!
